I'm sure I have a better photograph somewhere... This one must be about 10 years old now.
I've been taking photographs for the best part of 30 years.
After a short and unsuccessful time with an instamatic, I quickly moved to better things. Over the years I've progressed from a Canon AE1, to a Canon A1, to a Canon 50E, with a succession of zoom lenses.
I've always taken 35mm slides; only rarely prints. The colours of prints are not very good, to say the least. I was convinced of this after my photographs of the Egyptian desert were returned in shades of green. From then on it was Slides only. The processor can't fiddle those! I now have about 10,000 slides, all neatly catalogued and boxed.
I have tried my own developing and printing. This is mainly Cibachrome. The results are fantastic. There are no other printing options that give the quality of print and vibrancy of colour.
But this has now changed. I purchased a Canon EOS 10D digital body. This made several dramatic changes to my photography.
I quickly realised that the quality of my lenses was poor. I could see the differences quite easily when I compared my results with a friends. So I got rid of them and bought the lenses shown on the camera page. The improvement in quality is phenomenal, and well worth the expense!
As a consequence, I realised the quality of my Slides collection is rather suspect. However, I won't consign them to the bin just yet.
But the most dramatic of all changes is the learning curve to produce "photographs" rather than "snaps". The feedback from the digital camera is immediate. I can take hundreds of pictures, and the "film cost" is zero. The pleasure of photography has never been so great!
